It felt like a den of thieves, or a dark alley filled with drug pushers, much like Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. It was the haven of arcade addicts like myself, who would splurge so much money on a couple of minutes of sheer bliss where all logic and emotion are suspended, replaced by a manic digital stupor. The mecca of arcades during my time was Virra Mall in Greenhills. Back in high school, which for me meant 1981-1985, I caught the birth of the arcade craze and the video games that spawned it. Then coincidentally, my friend Sumi who’s in NZ, just bought a DS lite! I’ve always wanted one, but having sworn off games after overloading on them back in high school, I’ve stopped myself every single time I got the urge. But the point is, it got me in gadget mode again. The games are much harder there so I’ve stopped playing (for now), because it’s way too hard. I’ve actually finished the whole “earth” series, or whatever you call it, and I’ve gone to the moon (more rolling of eyes). But, live and let live, for some strange reason, this game has enslaved every free time I get on my hands. I know, I know, the gamers are probably rolling their eyes at how geeky my game of choice is. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve manhandled and commandeered someone else’s PSP and have been bewitched by a new version of a game I used to play on my Palm Pilot about 5 years ago: Super Collapse 3.
